Why don't you script all of it?
But on another note. . . you've found an ugly hack to get around it, but it's a sure bet that something's gonna break. The game downloads what it does for a reason. I feel for you if you're stuck on dial-up; I really do, but instead of staring at your monitor seething for 10 minutes (which I'm sure is an exaggeration), start the game and walk off and fetch a snack or a drink.

Just in case you did not realise it the more you have in your buddies list the longer it takes to log in. I have over 1000 in my buddies (for a very good tactical reason) and even on my 3meg link it takes me around 10 minutes. So, you might want to get rid of "spare" address book contacts 
It's the same thing with bookmarks.
